🕰️ Final Phase in Magic: The Gathering – Beginner's Guide

Okay, you've played your spells, attacked (or not), made your moves, and you're about to end your turn. Now what? Well, you're now entering the End Phase . And while it might seem like a boring or unimportant part, the truth is that there are key things that happen here that can make all the difference if you understand them well.

We're going to look at it in two parts: the Final Step and the Cleaning Step .

🔚 Final Step – The last chance

This part is like the "soft close" of the turn. This is where you can still do something before the turn passes to your opponent.

  • If you have cards or permanents that say "at the beginning of the end step", their abilities trigger now .
  • This is also your last chance to cast instants or activate abilities before your opponent begins their turn. So if you're going to do something, do it now or stay quiet until your next main phase!

Be careful with this: if a card that activates "at the beginning of the final step" enters play after that step has started , that ability won't activate until the next turn. It's a detail that's sometimes forgotten and can be costly.

🧹 Cleaning Step – Leaving everything in order

And here it is: this is the very last thing to do for your shift. It's like clearing the table before you leave.

  • If you have more than seven cards in your hand , you have to discard until you're left with seven. So if you've been drawing a lot, be careful or you'll lose valuable cards.
  • All damage to the creatures is erased , so the creatures that survived the fight are "healed," so to speak.
  • All those effects that say things like "until the end of the turn" or "during this turn" disappear here. Creatures revert to their normal state, lose bonuses, lose temporary abilities, etc.

Important: You usually can't do anything at this stage. Only if something unusual happens or there's a mandatory action (like discarding) can anything else happen.

🧠 Tips for this phase (that nobody tells you)

  • Don't lose cards because you've forgotten! If you have more than seven in your hand, think carefully about what you discard. We often throw things away without thinking and then regret it.
  • Take advantage of that "last moment" to act. Do you have an instant you want to use before your opponent's turn? This is the perfect moment.
  • Review your cards. Some have effects right at the end of the turn. If you don't know how they work, you could be missing opportunities without realizing it.

📚 In summary

The Final Phase might seem like just a formality before the next turn, but it's actually a crucial moment to finalize your play. This is where you get everything ready, clean up what needs cleaning, and, if you're clever, you might even gain an extra advantage.

And as I always say: the more you understand these small phases, the more refined your play will be. Because Magic isn't just about attacking and casting spells. It's also about knowing when to do things .

And if you find yourself stuck with cards you don't want to discard during this phase, or if your plays aren't putting you in a good position for the next turn, take a look at what's in your deck.
