🧙♂️ Card Types in Magic: What You Need to Know If You're Starting Out

When you first enter the world of Magic: The Gathering , one of the most overwhelming things can be the sheer variety of cards. There are thousands, with epic artwork, unusual text, and crazy effects... but don't worry, they all fall into a few basic categories that, once you understand them, will make your life much easier.

In Magic, the cards are divided into two main groups:

  • Permanents , which remain on the battlefield once you play them.

  • Single-use spells , which take effect and go directly to the graveyard.

We'll look at each type with examples and clear explanations, as if we were talking among colleagues.

🌍 Lands

Lands are the foundation of everything. Without them, you can't play practically anything. They're what give you mana , which is the magical energy you need to cast your cards.

They don't cost mana to play, but you can only play one per turn . There are five basic types:

  • Plain (white)
  • Island (blue)
  • Swamp (black)
  • Mountain (red)
  • Forest (green)

Then there are the nonbasic lands , which usually have special abilities, such as producing multiple colors or entering the battlefield tapped. A typical deck will have around 20 to 25 lands , depending on your playstyle.

🧟♂️ Creatures

They are your troops. You drop them onto the field, they attack, block, and deal damage. Each creature has strength (the damage it deals) and resistance (the damage it can withstand).

Many creatures also have special abilities: some fly, others deal damage before being blocked, others cannot be blocked, etc.

Important note : Unless they are in a hurry , they cannot attack the turn they enter play. This is known as summoning sickness .

📜 Spells

Spells are spells that you cast only on your turn , and more specifically during one of your main phases (when nothing else is happening on the stack).

They have an effect, they resolve, and they go to the graveyard. They don't remain in play.

Classic example:
🪄 Divination : You draw two cards. Easy, useful, and straightforward.

⏱️ Instants

They work just like spells, but you can cast them at any time , even during your opponent's turn. They're perfect for reacting to enemy plays or protecting yourself when they don't see it coming.

Examples that everyone knows:

  • Lightning : Deals 3 damage to any target. Brutal and fast.
  • Counterspell : Cancels any spell before it enters play. Very useful in control decks.

✨ Enchantments

Enchantments are effects that remain on the table, continuously affecting the game. Some are auras , which are placed on other cards (such as creatures), and others are simply there with constant effects.

A well-known example:
🔒 Pacifism : An aura charm that prevents a creature from attacking or blocking.

⚙️ Artifacts

Artifacts are like magic items. They are also permanents and are usually colorless , meaning you can play them in any deck without worrying about the color of the mana.

They can do everything: from giving mana, giving abilities to your creatures, dealing damage... they can even be creatures themselves.

And then there are the equipment : artifacts that can be equipped to a creature to improve it, like giving it a sword or armor.

🧙 Planeswalkers

These cards represent powerful allies who fight alongside you. They enter the field with loyalty counters and have various abilities that you can use once per turn. Some abilities increase their loyalty, while others decrease it.

Note: Opponents can directly attack your planeswalkers. If they run out of loyalty, they go to the graveyard.

They are powerful, rare cards that can turn a game around if you use them well.

🧠 In summary

Knowing the different types of cards in Magic gives you a huge advantage when you're starting out. You'll not only know what to expect from your deck, but also how to anticipate what your opponent might play.
