🌟 First Main Stage in Magic: The Gathering – Beginner's Guide

If you've just drawn a card and you're wondering, "Okay, now what?", well, now the fun begins. This part of the turn—called the first main phase —is where you decide how your game will unfold.

It's like a moment of reflection: "Do I launch an attack? Do I prepare to defend? Do I play my cards close to my chest or hold back just in case?" This is where you choose how you want to play your turn. Let's break it down.

🌍 Do you have a piece of land in your hand? Put it down now!

If you haven't played a land yet this turn, now's a good time to do it. Don't hold onto it thinking it will be better later, because it won't. Generally, you want access to mana as soon as possible.

Sometimes it makes sense to wait (for example, if you're playing a land that enters tapped and you don't need that color right away), but otherwise, just play it. More mana = more things you can do. Easy.

💪 Now it's time to launch things

Here you can play almost anything you have in your hand: creatures, enchantments, artifacts, planeswalkers, sorceries... anything that isn't instant goes here.

The idea is to set up your board: put creatures that attack or block, cast a spell that annoys the opponent, or put a planeswalker in place that starts causing trouble right away.

But be careful: think before you cast. Are you going to attack this turn? Or would you rather stay open to respond with an instant later? Some spells are better saved for after combat. Don't just cast everything for the sake of casting it.

⚙️ Do you have skills that can be activated at the table?

If you have any cards that let you do things (like "pay 2 mana and deal damage," or "sacrifice something and draw a card"), this phase is also good for using them. Here you can activate abilities of creatures or permanents that are on the battlefield.

The typical thing to do is use it now if it helps you prepare the field before combat, or if it gives you an immediate advantage.

📈 So what strategy should I use? Should I attack or stay back?

Well, it depends on how the game is going, of course. But I'll give you two general ideas:

  • If you're going to attack , this is the time to unleash creatures with haste , spells that buff your creatures, or even throw something that takes out a blocker before the combat phase begins.

  • If you prefer to hold out , you can play creatures with good defense, save mana to respond with instants, or prepare the ground for a counterattack on the next turn.

The important thing here is not to rush around playing cards without thinking. Sometimes, leaving yourself some free mana or keeping a card in your hand can win you the game.
